Midnight to Stevens from The Clash´s Clash on Broadway.

I´m on a bit of a mission to upload any Clash song I can´t find on Youtube, and well, I couldn´t find this one, so I uploaded it.

Easy as that.

I just threw togheter the video in a few minutes, nothing special, just random pics of the Clash and its members.

This song is about Guy Stevens, legendary producer who worked his magic on the London Calling album, but also produced countless of other legendary albums and accomplished much extraordinary, not to mention naming both Mott The Hopple and Procul Harum.

He sadly passed away in 1981, 38 years old after overdosing on prescription drugs. The Clash wrote this song in his memory.

"I searched through the drinkers

Each propped over his glass

I ran through each bar

Until I found guy at last

Guy youve been to the doctor

No I dont think it wise

Took one of his pills

Boiled the blood in my eyes.

When you played the master mix

To the company man

Took three million worldwide

To make him understand

You dont work for peanuts

But theyll push you too

Its that company trick

Were all jumping through

Bet you aint had no food now

Since you last went to sleep

The wild seed that was sowed

Will take forever to reap.

What days and nights though

Rocking out of ham yard

Oh skip that fandango

Bring the blues back down hard

Though chuck would never admit it

At the door of the jail

There stood guy stevens

And he was waving the bail.

Guy youve finished the booze

And you run out of speed

But the wild side of life

Is the one that we need."

RIP Joe and Guy.

It is actually Chuck Berry; Stevens was President of the Chuck Berry Appreciation Society in the 1960s and paid bail to get Berry out when he was serving time in 1963. He then brought Berry over to the UK for his first British tour.

One of my favorite Clash songs; question though - who is the "Chuck" mentioned in the lyrics? I've heard Charlie Watts, since Guy Stevens was affiliated with the Stones, but not sure how accurate that guess is.

One of the extras on the DVD The Ballad of Mott the Hoople is an interview with Mick Jones about Guy Stevens and the Clash. Worth watching. (There's lots of stuff about Stevens on the main portion of the DVD too, of course.)

Does anyone know why this wasn't included in a LP?

@AppoCC119 I know what you mean! This is a really moving song, I wish there were more Clash songs like this one. If my life was a movie, I'd want this to play at the credits.

@AppoCC119 Yes, same for me. When I got the box set Clash on Broadway I was like hmmm this song is different and pretty good. Then read Johnny's book and learned more about Guy. It's a heart wrencher.

I've really come to appreciate this song more and more as I've read Johnny Greens Clash book and learnt more and more about the great man that was Guy Stevens. At first this song seemed rather bland to me, now it almost makes me cry whenever I put it on. RIP Stevens. Also, updated with added lyrics.
