Meshuggah is death metal in the sense that they sing about existentialism which encompasses death. They also have lyrics about death (as much about life and alternate states too) and their music has a lot of similarities to death metal, so it's in the same vein for me. I love death metal and that's part of the reason I love Meshuggah. Periphery is a similar band that does not sound much like death metal, which they've also claimed themselves to me, to decipher a contrast.
