"Merlin's Time" was released on 24 Carrots, Al Stewart's ninth album, in the summer of 1980. Since nearly all Al Stewart's albums are strong it's not surprising that this record is so great....I'd say it's one of my favorites (which it is) but in the case of Al Stewart nearly each and every one of his records is a favorite! I remember when it was released thinking that it would be a much greater commercial success, there were at least 3-4 songs with potential to be hit singles (besides "Midnight Rocks" which stalled out at #24), "Rocks In The Ocean", "Running Man", this song, and maybe "Optical Illusion" would have seemed good candidates for release.

I've been working on a video for my favorite song from this album, "Murmansk Run/Ellis Island" for quite awhile but since it's taking so long I decided to jump into "Merlin's Time" (I've had several requests for this one). It's such a very short song there wasn't much room for multiple images and I ended up really working with just a few clips and pictures....mainly Bodiam Castle. If it's a late medieval moated castle you're wanting, Bodiam is it! I worked up several pictures of this unbelievably gorgeous place up for the vid, man some places must be impossible to take a bad picture of and this is surely one as there are so many awesome shots of it...but en the end I just used the one.....although I spent the majority of time for this video removing people/signs/cars from another one I really loved...and ended up (although the Photoshop work was pretty clean) not even using it!

Anyway, as usual I hope you enjoy the effort, in this case for Al Stewart's hauntingly beautiful "Merlin's Time".

[Lyrics]

And I think of you now

As a dream that I had long ago

In a kingdom lost in time

In a forest of evening

The archer is bending a bow

And I see you bring him bread and wine

Down the legions of years

The invaders have taken this land

And bent you to their will

And the memories fade of the ancients

And all that they had

Though the magic lingers round you still

Oh, who would walk the stony roads

of Merlin's time?

And keep the watch along the borderline

And who would hear the legends passed

in song and rhyme?

Upon the shepherd pipes of Merlin's time

Al Stewart's voice is just perfect for this song. I really cannot imagine anyone else singing it. Loved this song since I had the original LP all those years ago.

It's always so great to hear from other fans......Al Stewart is truly an exceptional artist. I've been listening to some of his later albums quite a bit in the last couple of months...though I seem to always go to the early stuff...there are real treasures in all his most recent albums as well! Thanks for the very gracious words for the videos....it's knowing wonderful fans like yourself enjoy them that makes it worth continuing. Thanks also for a thoughtful comment!

I'm so glad I found someone who likes Al Stewart's music as much as I do!!! This songwriter isn't too appreciated in my country ( Italy), and it's a pity.Since I discovered your channel I found a little piece of Paradise; your videos are actually AMAZING, all of them.Thank you for sharing these masterpieces of yours with all the world!
