I also saw them live as a different line-up, original members Martin Plaza & Greedy Smith, but I wanted them to play this song as a request, but they only played other well-known hits.

'10 To 1' was the Oils first US release in 1983, and it had taken another eight years for their previous albums to be released in the US. The band did quite a bit of television in the US as early as '83 to spread their message and Mr Garrett did a few US talk and debate shows, speaking about nuclear disarmament and other concerns. 'Power & The Passion' was approached in the US as a 'Dance' tune; however, the lyrics were too confrontational for the average clubber. The Oils had a bit to learn.

'Nips' reached # 1 on the UK Indi Charts around 1979. The album (Get Wet) got some good reviews in the UK press; which indicates a good start... also 'Too Many Times' was a Top 30 Hit in Canada; and 'If You Leave Me' was a New Wave Hit (for lack of a better term) in the US. Also, MTV (America) played Mental As Anything videos like 'Let's Cook'. Mental As Anything tried their luck internationally - INXS did it internationally.

i think you'll find "the nips are getting bigger" was a huge hit in UK and other places bar the states think it went number 2 in UK,The Mentals were pretty big in Canada and scandanavian countries as well and i think you'll find here in australia they still have the record(which probably never going to be beaten) of most top 40 single in charts by any australian act

Midnight Oil did care. Read 'Beds Are Burning : The story of Midnight Oil' (I think that's the title). That band were determined to break into the US (and of course, on their own terms). The band snubbed off Countdown because the show snubbed them off during their early days. The band showed up on the set to be told they weren't allowed to do the show coz they were late. Oils were pissed off and turned their backs on the show forever. They didn't do all those shows in the US for nothing.

I know, it is a shame... 'Too Many Times', 'If You Leave' and many others could have done very well internationally... their only problem was that they were an Aussie band and they werent as keen as INXS, Midnight Oil, AC/DC, Men At Work, et al; to take on the world.

In Australia they achieved massive success - at least on the charts and in the live circuit. I'm sure everybody that knows Cold Chisel knows who Mental As Anything are.... but I agree, they didn't get as big as INXS.

Martin Plaza has to be one of the most underrated/unknown great singers in pop music history. His vocals on Mouth to Mouth were superb.

Lost gem! Martin Plaza's vocals are just sublime!! Funny how Greedy Smith clowns about a bit like Split Enz in the 70s; while Wayne DeLisle just gets about his business. I don't know what's best; the tune or the strong, assured, cheery personalities of everyone in the group?
