Well, as much as I greatly respect Martina's work, this sounds more like an outtake. It needs more country and less R&B. The production around terribly dated rather than vintage and intimate. Sometimes remakes need an update. A good example of this was a Pet Shop Boys cover of Elvis' You Are Always On My Mind. They gave it a synth pop twist, which pleasantly surprised me. By Martina employing a Stax lite sound, she puts her limitations on display. This album is reminiscent of Sheryl Crow's 100 miles from Memphis album.She excels in singing original material; her voice is a force of nature. Also, she could've taken a cue from Ray Charles's Modern Sounds in Country & Western, and Rhythm, Country and Blues compilation. The latter was ironically produced by Don Was, the same man who oversaw this album. I will say that Martina sings country gospel very well. That's where the influence would've been better sourced from.I look forward to original songs from Martina.10 years ago
