This song at the time was written for Kurt but was played at Lanye's funeral. The other song off his second studio album "Whiskey for the Holy Ghost" called "The River Rises" was sung at Kurt's final service back in 1999 I believe. This song originally was written for Kurt there is no doubt about that.

I'm a huge Alice in Chains fan, and an even bigger fan of Layne Staley... I loved this song so much, I thought it was/is beautiful, so much so that I decided I wanted this played at my funeral when my day came, so when I found it that Lanegan performed this at Layne's private memorial for him, it meant so much more to me. Beautiful song, by a beautiful artist, played for another beautiful artist.
