I remember seeing this on TV! Wow, is she incredible! Her voice is like honey-to-the-ear! And another "Wow!" regarding my thoughts to how little of this kind of loveliness exists today! So much done in the name of Shock Value, and very little of true artistry, decency and grace, in my humble opinion! Margaret Whiting is the epitome of all those things!

One of the most beautiful musical experiences of my life happened as I awoke from a nap one afternoon to Whiting singing, "Ballad of the Sad Young Men." It was such a surreal experience!

Did Blossom Dearie ever record this song in English?

22 de julho: Aniversário dessa atriz e cantora de música popular e música country americana (1924 - 2011). O auge de sua carreira se deu entre os anos 40 e 50.

There's nothing like a Vocalist who can sing naturally and simply! She's the best!

I remember seeing Nat King Cole's TV show when I was a child in Southwest Louisiana, so it wasn't "banned" in my part of the South.

Not only is this a fantastic performance, it is also a marvelous statement of how show biz royalty like Miss Whiting came out to support Nat "King" Cole and his short lived TV show during the hight of the Civil Rights Era in the United States. This was no small act on her part. Sadly, the show was banned in the South.

I stand corrected! Yes I overlooked those earlier recordings that she cut with Billy Butterfield, so many thanks Stringplayer for drawing attention to that error in my description.

I love the song but there is a minor flaw in your description. Margaret Whiting's first hit record for capitol was not this but her father Richard A. Whiting's composition "My Ideal" in 1943.

I'm reading her autobiography (which is titled It Might As Well Be Spring) and she wasn't a heavy drinker, or smoked at all, far as I can tell. I think her voice just lost its sweetness with time - it does happen to some.

It was sung by the Jeanne Crain character in the film.
