This might be THE version of the openly gay Billy Strayhorn masterpiece composition. I saw Johnny Hartman at Lurlean's on the Southside of Chicago sometime in the 70s I think. He came into the club to catch Lurlean Hunters set with a woman on each arm. They all looked good! Decades later my former wife and daughter and I went to see the Aids Quilt at the Dome in Minneapolis. There with the others was a quilted blanket by folks who cared about him, honoring Johnny Hartman. I don't know what all that means. I was in both places and saw both things.

Hartman was a rare genius whom should have been much more famous; don’t know why people I’ve spoken to say they never heard of him- it pisses me off.

I discovered this song when I wasn't even 20 years old, because I was into Coltrane at that time. I don't need no Gaga.

It's about becoming a drunk after being broken. It's not atmospheric. without the depth and the truth of this song, you are missing the whole goddamn point.

This is Johnny Hartman's song. Queen Latifah's version is also fabulous.Let's not forget that this amazing song was written by Billy Strayhorn.

If anyone wants to know what jazz singing is as opposed to soul or r&b or gospel or anything else, they could listen to this.

Beautiful song and outstanding performance by those two legends. Does anyone got the score for this performance?

Oh, Lawdy, the hosiery on that woman's legs! I haven't seen anything like it in decades! LMAO. But it says it all-"Lush Life"! And Johnny, so classy to boot! Good contrast.
