This was a special night, with Phil Keaggy and Randy Stonehill performing at LeTourneau University in Longview, TX (2/5/10). When the two performed the song that Stonehill co-wrote with Keith Green (the song that was also one of Keaggy's big hits), it was a blessed event. Thankfully, the two allowed videotaping at the concert. It was a blessed evening indeed!

This might be my favorite Keith Green song. Phil Keaggy is so effortlessly amazing.

You mean humans are imperfect? Even human Christ-followers? Stunning...

Oh, you mean Mike Warnke. Big disappointment and greatly disillusioned. But the televangelists like Jimmy Swaggart and Jim Bakker and Jerry Falwell never disappointed me... because I never believed in them in the first place.

Jimmy Hendrix is quoted as saying Phil was the greatest guitar player alive!!! I concur!! :-) What a blessing these guys were, & Keith & yes, Larry Norman as well . . . for being themselves & bringing joy to our lives. I miss the Jesus Movement . . . what times. Sigh.

Nostalgia colored goggles... You can hardly say it's ALL show business any more than you could say it was ALL-real-no-show back then.

(continued) For me, what was saddest was when I recently discovered a famous bass singer was singing the songs of our Lord, in the limelight, all the while, indulging in his alcoholism. He was no help to another friend, a famous secular singer-perhaps the most famous of all time-who desperately needed help & not a drinking buddy, dying a premature death due to alcohol and drugs. The lesson I learned was, 'it ain't about the show'.

There are many faithful today, just not in the limelight. As for that time era, I was very, very young, but, I remember some 'fallen heros', ie.tel-evangelists, claiming the faith all the while milking finances from the poorest and living in mansions with solid gold bathroom sink faucets. Or, the writer famous for his tales of dramatic satanic deliverance, when years later, he confessed he made it up.

Not familiar with Lewis "love by surprise" - but I have read (many times) Lewis' "Surprised by Joy."

I was there. Saaweet! Saw Phil back in the 80's and was glad to see him again. I've been playing for 30 years and Phil would blow me and everyone I've ever seen live including Eddie Van Halen off the stage. Thanks Phil. look forward to jamming in heaven.

That's great teamwork, tailoring the music to that crowd at that particular moment in time. it's the beauty of being flexible in a live performance. Glad you pointed that out. Not a mistake, they're just 'flowing' with it.

WOW! Thanks for posting this, I really appreciate Randy Stonehill's music. I wish there were more of it on you tube, I keep checking periodically to see if someone has uploaded "Starlings" or "Christmas at Denny's".

Todd Fishkind also co-wrote this incredible song. In the seventies in the LA/OC area we heard this song many times as Keith Green, Randy, and Phil would all do their own versions. Still who would get tired of it? God did 'pull away the clouds that hung like curtains on my eyes, I was blind all these wasted years, and I thought I was so wise, until you took me by surprise." And I believe one of them said that the 'took me by surprise' line was a CS Lewis reference of 'love by surprise'.

It seems like two old friends just relaxing together and reminiscing about another old friend long since gone and doing the song as a tribute.
