A wonderful vocal improviser, and song stylist, Louis was well worth all the hype given him.

The earliest recorded version of this I will have to say is the most "poignant". If you've never heard it allow me to set the scene. (that the back ground noise paints in ones mind when they hear it.) it starts off with the sad and palpable exhaustion in the bands play. its very lilting (if that is even the right word for it) in the back ground you can hear club workers placing the floor chairs on their tables and even the sound of the floor sweeper as they mutter to one another and compliment the band on yet another great night. when the singing starts in its so weary and forlorn you can see in your mind that his head hangs heavy on his neck. And in that moment it hits you. That he IS literally singing this song specifically to himself as some sort of self affirmation that this IS to be his role in life and that there is nothing he foresees changing that,. This version has NONE of the razzamatazz usually associated with this song and thus it isn't the easiest version to get a hold of. But if you really yearn to learn about the man and what his life was like I couldn't recommend a better selection of his work.

Of course this is a great version - how could anything recorded by Armstrong in his prime not be? But by omitting the opening verse, which Bing Crosby sang in a version recorded earlier the same year, the song loses both its historical context and some of its poignancy.

Armstrong's rendition not as good as "Gigolo THE BEST EVER". although, Armstrong's trumpet is magic. check it out and tell me i'm wrong.
