Written by Elton John & Bernie Taupin for Kiki Dee's 1973 album "Loving & Free". Elton co-produced the album with Clive Franks for his own newly formed Rocket Records label. It's also the Elton John Band, featuring Davey Johnstone on guitars, Dee Murray on bass, Nigel Olsson on drums, and Elton himself on piano. A few years before "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" fame, Elton John & Kiki Dee were already friends and working together in 1973. She also sang back-up on Elton's Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album!

Lovely English Country ballad.  Though I agree with below.  This is a creepy, haunting song, judging by the lyrics!

shaped this at the end of Elton's creative period, this album includes some of this lady's own writing, but the arrangements and musical work combine with the lyrics and voice to produce a timeless recording.  On a scale of Gladys Knight and the (3) Pips I give this 2 Pips

The feel of the song and the mandolin in particular are so similar to the song Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy, which probably came out 2 or 3 years later. This was an incredible time in Elton John's life and his fingerprints are all over this song and album.

Thank You for the acknowledgement of my comments to Lonnie & Josie. I have just worked out how to reply. Sorry. Wow your tears show your kindness & honesty. You, like me see the truth in this song. Oh how life and songs have changed on us. Al !!ways remember there are some untainted people left, find them

It was a much more innocent time when this song was written. You could actually hitch a ride without fearing for your life. This song brings back memories of thumbing to Woodstock with my girl friend, brings tears to my eyes as the memories flood back in.

Wow this song should have a sequel, because Lonnie and Josie were in a strangers car heading for Mexico. Where did they end up ?? Plus the radio in the car blares out a warning - Keep your eyes open for Lonnie And Josie. I do hope they, 25 years later, are still fine so to speak ?? Kiki Dee sure does this song proud, what a rich toned voice she has. Mmmm.

@hotlixlyricalco I see it a little differently. This was escape and freedom. The driver was just a co-conspirator. I remember running away with my girl friend, and it felt just like this song makes me feel.

I love this song - when you listen to the lyrics there is something quite creepy about it, like the kids are being kidnapped and something scary is about to happen. Quite mysterious and haunting.
