This song is bittersweet. It's about a man who wants one last drink before he passes. Even though he's dieing, he still has fun and doesn't want his love ones to be saddened. He's lived a long and humble life and he's happy about that. That's how I would like to go. Not with loved ones crying over my corpse, but with my loved ones happy and grateful for me living a fantastic life and ending it with happiness. So let's raise our glasses people. I'm english and sadly the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem were hardly heard of here in England more's the pity, because I gather they concentrated more on america and Ireland.So we were stuck with grannies favourite Val Doonican.Mind you, some Irish groups are big here like The Dubliners, Chieftains and the Fureys.Incidentally the High Kings would do great here too, but they seem to stay mostly across the water in Ireland.9 years ago

My grandfather was a proud Irish man. Aged 89 he had his daily bottle of ale and a glass of whiskey in his local pub and passed in his sleep that night.
