Well I stepped into an avalanche,It covered up my soul; When I am not this hunchback that you see,I sleep beneath the golden hill. You who wish to conquer pain,You must learn, learn to serve me well. You strike my side by accidentAs you go down for your gold. The cripple here that you clothe and feedIs neither starved nor cold;He does not ask for your company,Not at the centre, the centre of the world. When I am on a pedestal,You did not raise me there.Your laws do not compel meTo kneel grotesque and bare.I myself am the pedestalFor this ugly hump at which you stare. You who wish to conquer pain,You must learn what makes me kind; The crumbs of love that you offer me,They're the crumbs I've left behind.Your pain is no credential here,It's just the shadow, shadow of my wound.I have begun to long for you,I who have no greedI have begun to ask for you,I who have no need. You say you've gone away from me,But I can feel you when you breathe.Do not dress in those rags for me,I know you are not poorYou don't love me quite so fiercely nowWhen you know that you are not sure,It is your turn, beloved,

Las migajas de amor que me ofrecesSon las migajas que yo dejé atrás.Tu dolor no es ninguna credencial,Sólo es la sombra de mi herida.Leonard Cohen. Avalanche. The crumbs of love that you offer me,They're the crumbs I've left behind.Your pain is no credential here,It's just the shadow, shadow of my wound.

I wonder how it must feel to play this and sing it and hear it and know that you wrote it. It must feel amazing

95 Cohen has been recognised for his songwriting and playing, just cause he ain't sold as much as his contemporaries don't mean a thing!!

@PosidenCB That's also kind of what he does ;) As he ages his voice tends more and more to actually speak, not sing.

I started listening to him in 1968 and am still listening and love the music more.

He could just stand there and talk, and it would be the most fantastic concert ever

I love this manic depressed SOB...........he puts my feelings into words like nobody else can. He never received the recognition in America he deserved but he is too great an artist to concern himself with ego. Bob Dylan is the only person close to his poetic/songwriting ability IMHO........
