One of my favourite Leadbelly recordings is his performance of the traditional folk song "John Hardy".John Hardy was a West Virginia railroad worker who shot Thomas Drews over a disagreement during a game of craps. Hardy was found guilty of murder and sent to the gallows where he attributed his downfall to whisky and said he had made his peace with god. John Hardy was hanged on January 18th 1894 in front of an audience of 3000 people. #Leadbelly #folk #guitar

RE rednecks the term original refered to whites of Norther European descent who worked outdoors. Because they worked outside and had pale skin, their necks turned red. They were poor farmers, mostly. The connotation of being racist and etc. came later.

This is a very unthoughtful report. Emotional but unthinkin. A hillbilly lives in the hills, i.e. Appalachia or Ozarks. A redneck works out in the sun, such as a roofer or construction carpenter or farmer

Rednecks and hillbillys are not the same. Rednecks tend to be prejudiced against certain kinds of people, such as blacks, Jews, gays. Hillbillys are no isolated that they don't have predjudices against specific grups much,because they have never met them. They do tend to be mistrustful of outsiders. Nowadays these distinctions are bluring. Even the most isolated communities have TV, and so people are starting to identify as redndecks, which is a shame. Theire traditonal culture is better.

theres a movie about his life.. went into a jail a couple of times that took up the majority of his life for fighting back some redneck guys who were pickin on him first.. The time he was went in the longest time was right after he got out, some white redneck guys were gonna go jump him cause they dont like him, one stabbed him, then leadbelly got the knife and stabbed him back but he got the guy in the neck and killed him.. didn't mean to but he was in jail till he was old.
