The question is whether a soprano (like Yoncheva) or a mezzo (like Joyce di Donato) is better suited to convey this "motbid melancholy" of the aria better over to the listener. After all, this aria was originally proposed for a "castrati" who is lamenting his "cruda sorte". So I actually prefer the mezzo voice which possess a faint "masculine" remembrance rather than the more "feminin" intonation of a soprano. But in alll due respect: Sonya Yoncheva does a wonderfull rendition of this Händel aria, but you should compare it with Joyce's version and make you own judgement. Sometimes there is no better or worse, it's just a bit different, just as with top Bordeaux or Burgundy wines...and it takes a connoisseur to be able to fathome the difference!.

THIS (and Mozart) is what this remarkable voice should be singing, not Traviata at the Met (during which anyone with a refined ear could hear great strain and trouble in the voice)! Damn the Met, they seem only to care about putting a pretty face on stage with no regard to health and longevity of the young singer. Do they think they can just ruin the next voice that comes along to sell tickets? What we lose in a unique artist can be unquantifiable. It is an atrocity.
