This is Larry Norman doing Jesus Freak, but it was recorded in 1998 on an album Larry called "The Mother of All Tribute Albums," written by Mark Heimermann and Toby McKeehan.

This is Larry Norman's song, not DC talk. He wrote this decades ago.

Larry Norman wrote and sang the song Jesus Freaks way before Michael Tate sang it on the album with DC Talk ,

I finally got the story straight on "Jesus Freak." It turns out, that on a rare Larry Norman CD, called "Father Touch," he did credit the two DC Talk songwriters for the song. I was wrong. I'm sorry if I offended anyone!

I remember rap at the end of the 78 or 79...so you're wrong at the mid 80's.

I first heard this song in 1981 from Larry Norman...so I always thought he wrote it

but still, the style of this song is not from the era which you are saying it from. Avant Garde stuff usually have elements taken from it and built upon and placed into popular music. This one fell into it perfectly, Larry Norman would have to be a prophet for that to have happened.

Larry sometimes used a rythmic talk/sing style on some songs. Take a listen to his song, "Readers Digest." Also, I found among my CDs, one he released named "Breathe In, Breathe Out," that had "Jesus Freak" on it. In the CD booklet insert, it says, "All songs written by Larry Norman, except...," and "Jesus Freak" was not listed as a song that Larry didn't write. Clearly, this is saying, he did write it.

considering rap didn't come about until the mid eighties, I say that this is highly unlikely

This song was written by DC talk. not larry norman. where do you get your information? I want to hear larry normans original version.

I can't believe that people think DC Talk wrote "Jesus Freak"! Larry Norman wrote it, and it is on his albums from the early 1970s! Larry was widely known as "the father of Christian rock." He wrote "I wish we'd all been ready," back then, too, predating DC Talk by DECADES!

I've got news for you... DC Talk was doing the LARRY NORMAN song, "Jesus Freak."

If Jesus Freak was released in the 60's... This is what it would have sounded like

This is interesting to listen to, after hearing Larry Norman's early recordings from the 1970s. Because this is a 1990s style song, but sung with Norman's distinctive country-boy accent rather than Toby Mac's harder-edged rap style voice.

@blueeflamingo The song was written by TobyMac from dc Talk and the band's producer, Mark Heimermann.

blueeflamingo...maybe you have "I Wish We'd All Been Ready" and this song confused. DC Talk covered the Larry Norman song "I Wish We'd All Been Ready" on a Norman tribute album. I'm positive that this song "Jesus Freak" was written by DC Talk (Toby Mac)
