Our future President happened to mention that, for her, every citizen of Croatia is a Croatian, no matter what nationality he or she is; that's something akin to the notion of American nation, where one can be an American despite the heritage: a Native, Hispanic, European, Asian... The trouble with that idea is that it can't simply be copy/pasted from U.S. to any little nationalist Balkan state: the idea of belonging to certain nationality is hugely influential here. While we can say that it is quite preposterous and logically (and biologically) inconsistent, it is the modus operandi of many a person living in ex-Yugoslavian states. It is therefore quite insulting to deny someone's ethnicity, so her statement caused quite a stir here. It is not the first such case, though: Serbian ex-President Nikolić stated in 2014. that the Bunjevac minority in Vojvodina (northern autonomous province of Serbia) aren't Croats, but a nationality of their own. He was promptly accused of trying to annihilate Croatian minority in Serbia, which was further fueled by handing out school books in cyrillic script to Bunjevac school children. Playing such games in such a volatile part of the Europe is wrong: just 20 years ago, people here were killing other people because of the ethnic background (and religion, too); nationalists on both (or all three, if we include Bosnia) sides play strongly on nationality as a biggest drive for their flock. It's got huge emotional burden and a little rationality, making it an ideal tool for right-wing parties and extremists, too. It is a strong unifying force, that national glue. We should not forget that it can so easily be abused by the dark side. #politikahr

Die Band Laibach wurde am 1. Juni 1980 im damals jugoslawischen Trbovlje gegründet. In diesem Jahr bereitete Laibach in Trbovlje das multimediale Projekt „Eine Alternative zur slowenischen Kunst“ vor, das aufgrund der „unangemessenen Verwendung von Symbolen“ allerdings schon im Vorfeld von der jugoslawischen Regierung verboten wurde. Auf den Plakaten war das Schwarze Kreuz von Kasimir Malewitsch gemeinsam mit dem Namen Laibach verwendet worden.1982 spielte die Gruppe ihre ersten Konzerte in Ljubljana, Zagreb und Belgrad auf ihrer „Tournee der drei Hauptstädte“. Laibach gab damals jedem Konzert einen eigenen Namen, so trug beispielsweise das letzte Konzert des Sängers Tomaž Hostnik den Namen Dotik Zla (‚Berührung des Bösen‘). Hostnik verübte nach dem Konzert in Zagreb Suizid, an seine Stelle als Sänger trat Milan Fras. Am 23. April 1983 kam es bei einem gemeinsamen Konzert mit 23 Skidoo und Last Few Days im Rahmen der Musik-Biennale Zagreb zu einem Eklat. Um fünf Uhr morgens wurde das Konzert gewaltsam von der jugoslawischen Armee und kroatischen Polizei gestoppt, da man den Film The Future Continues und einen Pornofilm übereinander projiziert hatte. Dabei waren unter anderem der drei Jahre zuvor verstorbene Staatspräsident Tito und ein Phallus gleichzeitig auf der Leinwand zu sehen. Die Band musste Kroatien verlassen. Kurz darauf unterschrieb die Band einen Plattenvertrag mit der staatlichen jugoslawischen Plattenfirma ZKP RTV für die erste LP Nebo žari (‚Der Himmel glüht‘).Der Vertrag wurde jedoch wieder aufgehoben, da die jugoslawischen Autoritäten sich bezüglich der ideologischen Einordnung Laibachs und NSKs unsicher waren.
