I heard this song in the seventies and was taken by the lyrics and the music, particularly at the ethereal 'when you sleep do you have dreams?' bit. It just seemed different to everything else around at that time, and to me, even had a hint of creepiness.

Dory Previn is an American lyricist, singer-songwriter and poet. During the late 1950s and 1960s she was a lyricist for motion picture songs, and with her first husband André Previn received several Academy Award nominations. In the 1970s, after their divorce, she released six albums of original songs and a live album. Dory Previn's lyrics from this period are characterised by their originality, their irony, and their honesty in dealing with her troubled personal life, as well as more generally about relationships, sexuality, religion and psychology. She has continued to work since then as a writer of song lyrics and prose. 'Lady with the Braid' was from one of her most acclaimed albums, 'Mythical Kings and Iguanas'. Update - Dory died on 14 Feb 2012 at the age of 86. (Summarised from Wikipedia).

I have done a video using images of Dory and the Don Draper character from Mad Men, one of my favourite shows. I could imagine Don making his way through Dory's various scenarios. Comments are invited.

Father John Misty covering her turned me in to a fan. Now, I'm a full blown Previn fan.

She was an official lunatic (certified). She told truth as she saw it, She was walled-up (literally, with bricks) by her father (according to her auto-biography.) "That wall, myself..."

Thank you, Wilson - I love it when I can listen to something and then follow through with the story behind the singer/poet. Wondering if anyone has thought to write her life story? I would entitle it "The Life Unwritten." We never got to watch Mad Men - great that you've used clips from the series to add an interesting 'feel' to the music.

Goodbye my lady. You wrote my life as though you were watching over my shoulder. Only one other writer, Alannis Morissette, has shown the same combination of insight and courage to be brutally and starkly honest with no apparent concern for the criticisms and personal consequences that this forthrightness might bring to each woman, both privately and publicly. We've lost one of the truly unique - I just found out, so today she has my tears as I listen. Peace Dory. Finally.
