I heard this on Okinawa '68-'69 but I think the singer was a woman. I remember an Okinawan girl who sang it for me and told me what it meant but it was on the radio too. I would really like to know what version I was listening to.

I love it. Back to early 1960 this great song played after "Sukiaky" (either in Englis or original of Mr Sakamoto). I and my "litte Larti" used to heard this from our old (the only) "Blue Dot" radio.

Well, I actually haven't heard Rusty Richards' version but I assume a country artist wouldn't be singing this in Japanese. However, I found a website on Ebay selling the record and it looks just like the record of Golden Moon (China Nights) that I remember playing on my phonograph. And it came out in the early 60s, too, in 1961. And the same composer (Takeoka) is credited.

No, this was sung in perfect Japanese (first half) and I'm pretty sure it was the same artist and I bought the 45 in about 1963. Could this disc have been released in an earlier, faster more peppy version with a different title (Golden Moon)? I googled this and there was in fact a version with the title Golden Moon by a C&W artist named Rusty Richards but that isn't it. The one I remember was half in Japanese and had a lively instrumental in the middle with an Asian stringed instrument.

Dick Curless has a version of Shina No Yoru with the lyrics "dreamy nights of China" in it... were you thinking of his version?

I had a copy of this song in the early 60s when I was a kid but I'm really scratching my head because it was by the same artist but the version was a little more upbeat, with a different instrumental in the middle between verses done with some kind of Asian stringed instrument. Like this one, it was sung half in Japanese and half in English, but the title of the record was "Golden Moon (China Nights)" and the final words of the song were in English: "dreamy nights of China".
