A tribute video to my favourite keyboard player.

Song from Kevin's demos featured in "Songs meant to be heard".

Pictures from the internet [google images, themooreatorium.com, lastfm]

This song is about a guy who has been left from his woman and falls in love with a girl photo on a page of a magazine.

When Kevin got in the studio with Dream Theater to record their third work Awake (1994) this song was already done. Then he left the band just after the release of the album. The purpose of this demo was to show to James Labrie how to sing the song.

This song also features samples from "A room with a view" and "full house"

Enjoy.

Lyrics

Falling through pages of Martens on angels

Feeling my heart pull west

I saw the future dressed as a stranger

love in a space-dye vest

Love is an act of blood and I'm bleeding

a pool in the shape of a heart

Beauty projection in the reflection

Always the worst way to start

"But he's the sort who can't know

anyone intimately, least of all a

woman. He doesn't know what a woman

is. He wants you for a possession,

something to look at like a painting or an ivory box.

Something to own and to display. He doesn't want you to be real,

or to think or to live. He doesn't love you, but I love you.

I want you to have your own thoughts and ideas and

feelings, even when

I hold you in my arms. It's our last chance... It's our

last chance..."

Now that you're gone I'm trying to take it

Learning to swallow the rage

Found a new girl I think we can make it

as long as she stays on the page

This is not how I want it to end

And I'll never be open again

"...I was gonna move out...ummm...get,

get a job, get my own place, ummm,

but... I go into the mall where I

want to work and they tell me, I'm,

I was too young..."

"Some people, gave advice before,

about facing the facts, about

facing reality. And this is, this

without a doubt, is his biggest

challenge ever. He's going to have to face it.

You're gonna have to try, he's gonna to have to try and,

uh, and, and, and get some help here. I mean no one can

say they know how he feels."

"That, so they say that, in ya know

like, Houston or something, you'd

say it's a hundred and eighty degrees,

but it's a dry heat.

In Houston they say that?

Oh, maybe not. I'm all mixed up.

Dry until they hit the swimming pool."

"...I get up with the sun... Listen.

You have your own room to sleep in,

I don't care what you do. I don't

care when. That door gets locked,

that door gets locked at night by nine o'clock.

If you're not in this house by nine o'clock, then you'd

better find some

place to sleep. Because you're not going to be a bum in

this house.

Supper is ready..."

There's no one to take my blame

if they wanted to

There's nothing to keep me sane

and it's all the same to you

There's nowhere to set my aim

so I'm everywhere

Never come near me again

do you really think I need you

I'll never be open again, I could never be open again.

I'll never be open again, I could never be open again.

And I'll smile and I'll learn to pretend

And I'll never be open again

And I'll have no more dreams to defend

And I'll never be open again

An amazing composition! In most cases speed is useless. Feeling is everything in music.

Wish he could re-do it with O.S.I. They'd kill it. In the good way.

Yes Rudess is a better player technically. But he will never have the emotion of Moore. Playing live with tabs shows how JR has to be so clinically perfect like in an orchestra.Songs in metal band live played with the soul from memory never seen Moore on stage with tabs!!! Its all pure emotion go back and watch the DT live in tokyo video its pure drive live from moore.JR is fantastic and has taken DT on but always think he's a little too perfect for a band situation. Should be doing solo stuff bit like trying to be in a band with joe satriani (chickenfoot) Hmmm thats my point doesnt work...

Rudess is a better player, but he isn't half the writer. That goes for Illumination Theory too, nowhere near Space-Dye-Vest, a song I cannot live without. The fans know best.

I think this guy below me is a flipping idiot. Jordans most famous he is only partly responsible for SFAM bc Sherinian wrote the original demo with Petrucci. I am not fond of much Rudess has done. Nothing he has done I like more than a Moore masterpiece.

I saw people saying "how great would DT be if KM stayed" and things like that. I dont agree on that. Indeed Moore was great(Wont talk about Sherinian, he wasnt as good as those two imo), but Jordan made Moore's songs even better at lives and just as he arrived at the band, they released prog metal's possibly the best album in 1999. Emotionally Moore could be great but Jordan did way more for the band, i think he's the better of a keyboarder.

Yep, he does. And I like the "Awake" version better, maybe it's the producing... Anyway, to each his own.

labrie sings on the entire awake version. moore does overdubs on the song as well. i like moore's vocal version better, if only it were properly recorded by him.

I haven't said "Kevin isn't singing" I said LaBrie, who is a member of DT, is singing. They are both singing, and I'm also guessing what little there is of instruments other than the keyboards is played by the rest of the members of DT. Which means overall it was recorded with DT, alright? Just compare the Demo version and this version,LaBrie is singing on the album version, specially clear around 4:40 and 5:30.

sorry dude, that's wrong....it's Kevin singing it on the awake album

Arik

Do you understand the difference between recorded and composed? Again, the version appearing on the "Awake" album was composed entirely by Moore, but LaBrie is singing. So at the very least the two of them recorded it together. And ffs, I don't really care whether it's a DT song or not, it is a great song and I like it.

Raphilan Charito

No it's only recorded by Kevin, just published on the DT album

Why do you seem angry in your comment? We're basically agreeing that Kevin Moore is one talented dude and that this is a great song. Also, as far as I know it was composed by Moore, but there's a version recorded with Dream Theater, on Awake, where Labrie sings, and I liked that one better, but both are very good. Chill, it's ok, everything is fine.

Very true Phil ! LaBrie is passionate, but Kevin even more, because that's his own baby.

LaBrie sings it so well but this is the rare KM classic. ♥

DAMN IT'S NO DT SONG!!! can't hear that anymore!! it's been only recorded by Kevin! He was the dream of Dream Theater. They never found back on this again...Ruddess is brilliant but Kevin is magic!

Parag Panchal

He wanted to show the way to sing this song! He did not intend to sell it in his vocals.

Wow this is brilliant. I like this version a lot more than the DT version I reckon. This is much darker. Moore's production is great.
