Kellswater

New Words & Music: Andy Irvine

Here's a health to you Bonny Kellswater

Where you get all the pleasures of life

Where you get all the fishing and fowling

And a bonny wee lass for your wife

O it's down where yon waters run muddy

I'm afraid they will never run clear

And it's when I begin for to study

My mind is on them that's not here

For it's this one and that one may court him

But if anyone gets him but me

It's early and late I will curse them

That parted lovely Willie from me

O a father he calls on his daughter

"Two choices I'll give unto thee:

Would you rather see Willie's ship a-sailing,

Or see him hung like a dog from yon tree?"

"O father, dear father, I love him;

I can no longer hide it from thee;

Through an acre of fire I would travel

Along with lovely Willie to be."

But it's woe to the heart that confines me

And keeps me from my heart's delight

Strong walls and cold irons they bind me

And a stone for my pillow at night

O yonder's a ship on the ocean

And she does not know which way to steer

From the east to the west she's a-blowing

She reminds me of the ways of my dear

O it's yonder my Willie will be coming

He said he'd be here in the spring

And down by yon green shades I'll meet him

And among yon wild roses we'll sing

For a gold ring he placed on my finger

Saying: "Love, bear this in your mind;

If ever I sail from old Ireland,

You'll mind I'll not leave you behind."

Farewell to you bonny Kellswater

Where you'll get all the pleasures of life

Where you'll get all the fishing and fowling

And a bonny wee lass for your wife.

Well, that's one way of looking at it, I guess. It misses the fact, though, that those good bold men did not stand to be fettered by convention or to be cowed by respect for thei "betters", who gave them the boot. Kicking them out was, in one way, a 'HAWNKIN' mistake!. In another, though, it was true serendipity. Lady Liberty saw their value and gave them the leg up that they deserved! They paid Her back, right and proper and, when the time came, forgave all and saved Englands' ass, THREE TIMES IN ONE CENTURY!. We will, in all likelihood, need to do so again. Londonistan, anyone?

Dear Jeff, ;-)) This one also features among my all-time favourites, which Andy recorded with Planxty on their 'The Woman I Loved So Well' album in 1980. I am always deeply moved when he makes reference to his mother, which he does quite often and to whom he dedicates this song. He also wrote about her in his online biography, at his website. Thank you very much for uploading this additional gem of a song and tune. With kind regards; Patrick.
