Words & Music: trad. / Arr.: Andy Irvine

[Learnt from the singing of Brigid Tunney of Belleek, Co. Fermanagh]

As I roved out on a bright May morning

To view the meadows and the flowers gay

Whom should I spy but my own true lover

As she sat under yon willow tree

I took off my hat and I did salute her

I did salute her most courageously

When she turned around, well the tears fell from her

Saying: "False young man, you have deluded me"

"A diamond ring I own I gave you

A diamond ring to wear on your right hand"

"But the vows you made, love, you went and broke them

And married the lassie that had the land"

"If I married the lassie that had the land, my love

It's that I'll rue till the day I die

When misfortune falls, sure no man can shun it

I was blindfolded, I will ne'er deny"

Now at nights when I go to my bed of slumber

The thoughts of my true love run in my mind

When I turn around to embrace my darling

Instead of gold, sure 'tis brass I find

And I wish the Queen would call home her army

From the West Indies, Amerikay and Spain

And every man to his wedded woman

In hopes that you and I shall meet again

Do not tell me: The Beatles have returned and one of them is a lady. (Grin.)Love this kind of music. Well... I normally like all kinds of acoustic music. The only music(?) I do not like is "House" and "Techno".

Check out some of our stuff, we have fun. We bill ourselves as Kinda Keltic, a real mix of Irish, Scottish and American traditional music. Our channel is Three Times Through, same channel that listed the Irvine stuff.

I DO like Irisch and/or Scottish music.

Don't mind old recordings. I listen to music from 1920 - 1930 as well. I'll go searching. Thanks for the info.

Do a search for Andy Irvine Planxty. You will get hits, old recordings but wonderful stuff.

This is my first time encounter with this guy. like him. And also always loved his stile of music. Let us call it "old time religion".

Bill is right & this is what I meant by the finger muscles doing all the 'remembering', without the player having to focus much mental attention onto the playing while it's happening; it's like an automatic pilot, isn't it? ... ;-) ... Coming back to Andy himself, I'd love to hear him explain in detail how he gradually developed his style into what it is now: a complete new method of playing the mandolin family of instruments. Until then, we'll all try to figure it out by ourselves! Patrick.

Bill Keith (Famous Banjo Player) once told me that you need to practice the fingering until it just comes out almost without thought and eventually that evolves into mixing the pieces together, without thought. Probably easier to just have a second brain like Andy!

He once said something like "... You need to be a little schizophrenic to synchronise the singing and the fingering, but you mustn't try too hard or it fails; you need to sing and play and, at the same time, think of something else altogether!" And it's true; we've all been 'there', once the lines are learned and the finger muscles have 'memorised' the action. Another 'trick' I learned from observing Segovia, is to look ahead to where your fingers will go next on the fretboard. Patrick.

Ahaaa! So, *that's* where the fingers should go!!! ... ;-)) With kind regards; Patrick.

He totally amazes me when he combines vocal, bouzouki and harmonica. I am quite sure he has 2 musical brains. It is very difficult to play like he does, sing songs with so many verses and throw in harmonica breaks. Truly a musical genius..

Certainly my pleasure to upload. Not only was a treat to see Andy in such and intimate environment but then to get to edit it. Spent a lot of time watching his fingering while editing!

Dear Jeff, ;-)) This is another of my all-time favourites among Andy's many great songs! The only previous recording of *this* version of 'As I Roved Out' is on Peter Ratzenbeck's album 'Resonances', where Andy accompanies himself on his Sobell long-scale [20.5ins] mandola tuned CGDG [at fret 0], just as in this clip [GDAD + capo5]. However, he didn't add the harmonica at the time, so it's really nice to have it in this performance. Thank you *so* much! ;-)) With kind regards; Patrick.

I am pretty sure this is the only solo performance of this! Great treat! Thanks so so much!
