"The Star-Spangled Banner" is the national anthem of the United States of America. The lyrics come from "Defence of Fort McHenry", a poem written in 1814 by the 35-year-old lawyer and amateur poet, Francis Scott Key, after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry by the British Royal Navy ships in Chesapeake Bay during the Battle of Fort McHenry in the War of 1812.

The poem was set to the tune of a popular British song written by John Stafford Smith for the Anacreontic Society, a men's social club in London. "The Anacreontic Song" (or "To Anacreon in Heaven"), with various lyrics, was already popular in the United States. Set to Key's poem and renamed "The Star-Spangled Banner", it would soon become a well-known American patriotic song. With a range of one and a half octaves, it is known for being difficult to sing. Although the song has four stanzas, only the first is commonly sung today, with the fourth ("O! thus be it ever when free men shall stand...") added on more formal occasions.

The fourth stanza includes the line "And this be our motto: In God is our Trust.". The United States adopted "In God We Trust" as its national motto in 1956.

"The Star-Spangled Banner" was recognized for official use by the Navy in 1889 and the President in 1916, and was made the national anthem by a congressional resolution on March 3, 1931, which was signed by President Herbert Hoover.

Before 1931, other songs served as the hymns of American officialdom. "Hail, Columbia" served this purpose at official functions for most of the 19th century. "My Country, 'Tis of Thee", whose melody is identical to the British national anthem, also served as a de facto anthem before the adoption of "The Star-Spangled Banner."[4] Following the War of 1812 and subsequent American wars, other songs would emerge to compete for popularity at public events, among them "The Star-Spangled Banner."

Lyrics:

O! say can you see by the dawn's early light,

What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming,

Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,

O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?

And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,

Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there;

O! say does that star-spangled banner yet wave,

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore dimly seen through the mists of the deep,

Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,

What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,

As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?

Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,

In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:

'Tis the star-spangled banner, O! long may it wave

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore

That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion,

A home and a country, should leave us no more?

Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution.

No refuge could save the hireling and slave

From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:

And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave,

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

O! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand

Between their loved home and the war's desolation.

Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the Heav'n rescued land

Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation!

Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,

And this be our motto: "In God is our trust;"

And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave

A beautiful song with much meaning. Listen to those words! ...gave proof through the night that our flag was still there....My pet peeve today is the nonsense I hear that it is too hard to sing. Sometimes an individual with a beautiful voice is invited to sing. It is understandable to want to stand and listen, but not this song. Every American should stand and sing it proudly at every chance, every sporting event, every school event and especially at awards ceremonies. I have been to international events where people from around the world sing out their national anthems. Watch the American teams standing chewing gum. It infuriates me..How about when the announcers say, "Please stand for the singing of our National Anthem." It infuriates me when a comedienne is invited to sing and then truly disgraces herself, our anthem and our nation by mockingly singing those special words. I say we need to join in singing whether invited to or not. Show our patriotism and sing it proudly and reverently. Forget the high notes if they are out of your range, but sing, sing, sing the rest of the song. "Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming?Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight,O'er the ramparts we watch'd, were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there.O say, does that star-spangled banner yet waveO'er the land of the free and the home of the brave? So far as I know we are still the land of the free and the home of the brave!!!Let's show some patriotism and sing while we still can.

The best ever. I grew up with her songs and saw her motivate the troops and country with her beautiful voice and patriotism. There are none like her today. It was when voice counted, not revealing outfits and background singers and theatrics.

nice until 1:24.the reprise after 1:24 is not necessary. it's a different thing. it's a separate performance, not ugly but not necessary.

You need Conservatives to provide balance for the Liberal crap. But it would be impossible for a free thinking liberal to understand that. The only free thinking a liberal does is thinking everything should be free for liberals....Providing Conservatives pay for it.

You can't beat Kate's singing of America's patriotic songs. I think Rosanne was a disgrace to this song! GOD BLESS AMERICA!

The old poster wow..and you Americans laughed and still do about other countries propaganda posters..talk about hypocrisy..but I don't hate America...you give the world many good things like great movies and wonderful music and tasty food and drinks..so yes...I like America but..lets hope you soon abandon the right-wing conservative and close to fascist rhetoric of the republicans...the future is for the liberals and freethinkers, away from religious dogma and obscure small minded politicians

Truley an American treasure when we needed it most and ever more now. She sang with true love of America and all that our naton stand for. There are no singers today that can compare or come close to the feeling she brough to our Men and Women who fought for and died for our Nation or any who have served in the defense of our great nation.

There will never be another Kate. She was the absolute best! Closest I've heard since was Mama Cass Elliott, whose voice was very similar in tone and strength.
