LYRICS:

Over in Killarney

Many years ago

Me mother sang a song to me

In tones so sweet and low.

Just a simple little ditty,

In her good old Irish way

And l'd give the world if she could sing

That song to me this day.

Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral, Too-ra-loo-ra-li,

Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral, hush now, don't you cry!

Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral, Too-ra-loo-ra-li,

Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral, that's an Irish lullaby.

My mom who is now 80 and I sing this song as we end our telephone conversations quite often along with other Irish songs my grandfather use to sing to my mom when she was young. I now sing them to my grandchildren.

I will be honest, during my first time, I started to cry and the guy I was with stopped, cuddled me close, and sang this to me. . . I will use this song for my future children, if I have any.

John Gary's version is far better, even though I enjoy listening to Kate.

My dad's family is ethnically Bajan, my mom's side is proud Irish Catholic. I shed a tear every time I hear this song that my grandma used to sing for me (she was from County Donegal.) Thanks! Btw Kate Smith has a beautiful voice.

When I was a child I remember my favourite babysitter (a close friend of my mother's) singing this song to me. I used to pester her to sing it to me over and over again. I absolutely loved this song, sang it to my three children and am now singing it to my grandsons. My youngest grandson pesters me to sing the lullaby to him in the same way I did as a child. This is one of my three favourite lullabies. The other two are "Hush little Baby, Don't You Cry" and Brahm's Lullaby.

My husband's grandmother had a player piano and when we were dating we'd come to her home and she'd get pumping those bellows and sing all her Irish favorites...this I think was her most favorite! We own that piano and all the rolls now,but the bellows are long gone!

My dear sweet Grandmother, Maggie, sang this song to me, and also When Irish Eyes Are Smiling. She's been gone for many years now and I still miss her so much, especially around St. Paddy's Day. She dearly loved her Irish heritage and so do I.
