Remastered some extremely rare footage of the band Kansas performing COWS at the Great Allentown Fair on Aug. 6th, 1977. This was filmed during their Leftoverture tour as part of a CBS tv special called "State Fair America". First air date was Sept. 10th, 1977.

According to Kerry Livgren the entire show was filmed by the CBS tv crew. It's not known if those tapes still exist. If someone would be able to retrieve them, the band has said they would consider a release on DVD.

This video is proof that Steve Walsh was at one time one of the best singer's (if not the best) in rock n' roll. Yesterday, I heard the news that Steve will be quitting Kansas within the next couple of months. Although I was initially saddened by the news, I was also relieved because I think Walsh's voice has been spent for some time. Although his voice had slowly been deteriorating for some time, around 2006 or 2007 his voice lost all of the power and intensity that once made it so special. His voice also developed this hollow, cartoonish quality that often made it sound like he was inhaling helium while he was singing.I'm hoping that the band will convince one-time former member, John Elefante to be the new singer. If you have not heard his last 2 solo albums, you should know that his voice is still in remarkable shape and that he is still a pretty decent songwriter. I think the song "One Day by The Lake" (which also features Kerry Livgren on lead guitar) is the best Kansas song I have heard since the late 70's or early 80's. The fact that John is still interested in writing Kansas-type songs (something Walsh was no longer interested in) means that a future Kansas album may no longer be out of the question.I wish the band all the best in their search for a replacement. Steve leaves some awfully big shoes to fill. IMO, the ideal situation would be to add John Elefante as the new lead singer and 2nd keyboardist. In addition, I would also like to see them talk Steve into returning as the primary keyboardist (and occasional vocalist.) Lets face it, so many Kansas songs require multiple keyboardists and Walsh is a very good keyboard player. In his prime, he was one of the best Hammond organ players in rock n' roll.

Wow, unbelievable this exists...I was there with 3 friends, sat in the bleachers behind this shot. Kansas opened with COWS and closed with Cheyenne Anthem where at the climax of the song, the entire band had dissappeared from the stage. Also Child of Innocence played just before encore...great show...37 years ago...geesh!

I saw the "State Fair America" TV special when it aired in 1977. They also played a clip of "Questions of my Childhood" with a slide show of each band member and a child that maybe looked like each one when younger.

Wow. Thanks for posting. I was there. They played two nights in a row as one of the feature acts during the 1977 fair. Allentown was definitely one of the first areas outside the midwest that accepted these guys. Song for America got a good amount of radio play on the AOR station in Allentown when it was released. Amazing memories.
