In my opinion the best version of this fantastic song Icarus, with stronger vocals and another twist in the melody than the original and the other liveversions I have heard. This is the first version of this song I heard.

Kansas was one band who sounded just as good, if not better, live than in studio!

In 1990, before my Sr. year in high school I was forced to move thousands of miles away. I was bummed. Once I reached my destination, I stumbled across this record and song and everything made sense after that. At my new destination, I turned everyone on to this and everyone was blown away. Everyone thought I was far in front of them musically because I knew of this old "prog" rock. I got laid a bunch of times. And isn't that what really matters?

I have to apologize. I post hundreds of Kansas videos (no exaggeration!) And I've heard this song dozens and dozens of times. This version (which is excellent and during the period that the band was hitting on all cylinders, 1974-1981) is similar to most. Walsh did tend to switch things up a little (not much in those years) but he really started experimenting with different vocal lines in later years. If you're a fan check out my channel. Loads of Kansas there. Some rare and many live shows.

Awesome version of Icarus. The band was certainly at the top of their game. I love Robby's classical-sounding violin especially compared to the country music textures that Ragsdale produces when he plays this song today. Back then, Steve would often double many of Robby's violin parts on his ARP Pro-DGX synth (as he does here at 2:24) and the overall sound of violin and synth is incredible as well as unique.

What is the "twist" in the melody that you refer to?

i think i still prefer the DKRC version from 75, vocals on that are even more mind blowing i think..but its a close one....
