That's debatable. Rufus and Carla's hit gave the company much needed capital to continue operating, but they would never have had the hit if there weren't a Stax Records in the first place. The founders of the company deserve the credit. It's not a chicken or the egg scenario. Besides, it was Estelle Axton who took a second mortgage on her home to start the company.

If it hadn't been for Rufus Thomas, there wouldn't have been a Stax Records. He and his daughter, Carla, gave the label its first hit, "Cause I Love You".

late 64 used to play this and the "b" side "all night worker, in the all night RnB clubs in the west end thru 65 heard it played loads in the last chance saloon, along with "can your monkey do the dog" great memories from the old days, thanks hawk you posted a classic

Rufus was a true ambassador of Memphis Music. One of my favorite memories of him was having lunch at Sun Studios Cafe. Over and over, we were interrupted by tourists wanting his picture or autograph. He graciously accommodated them all over and over. What a gentleman. Rufus - we love you. Thank you for being Rufus.

Either 66 or 65. Was never into Rufus Thomas at the time so don't know when he would have been singing this. Cathy McGowan was the compere in 65 and 66 so could have been either.
