Possibly one of Joni's earliest recordings - from my collection of Joni rarities. Please contact me if you know more about this recording or if you are a Joni collector / trader - always looking for something I don't have.

This is her VERY FIRST song ever, written on a bass ukelele on a train to the rhythm of the train on the way to her first big triumph as a folk singer at a big festival.

She'd be 22 here.... So many early songs she never recorded, & before she hit the States.

What a tune! I can't understand why this didn't make it onto an album. This is the second time I heard this and goose bumps all over.

Joni Mitchell's first original song, 1965, "Day After Day," composed on a train to Toronto, pregnant and unmarried, pondering her fate.

I love this song . I only listened to it a couple of times and now it's permanently in my head. I wish Joni still wrote some straightforwards acoustic folk songs but I understand she has to do what is good for her.

This is definitely from her early days circa 1964 or '65. This is a traditional folk style ballad. Folkies love singing about railroads. I also agree with the comment that stated she sounds like Joan Baez. This is a Baez style tune.

This would have sat nicely on Song to a Seagull.

Oh what a joy it is to hear one of Joni's early songs that I'd never heard before ..& I thought I'd had a fairly complete collection of her early albums. You made my day, Danrag,& thanks SO much for sharing these treasures!

She said she memorized/got to know a specific Miles Davis album very well during her teens. Wish I could remember what album it was but in an interview she said she knows the songs on that album better than she knows any other pieces of music, including her own. But still, even with her prior obsession with Miles Davis this is a miraculous first song..

According to her Wikipedia article, this is the first song she wrote. Obviously she'd done a lot of study, because this is an amazingly sophisticated piece of music for a first effort.
