it's a spiritual - something better was waiting for them than slavery. The song also was a code: the chariot that swung low meant h. tubman et al were near, those who were ready would be picked up and helped north (over the river jordan) with their friends waiting (the society of friends - the quakers - were waiting in n. england towns and cities to help escaped slaves). the band of angels were those that brought great tidings to the slaves - departure dates, locations, numbers that could be accommodated, how many days walking to prepare for... many spirituals were specific to an area (at first) because each song was a coded message from the underground railroad operators to the slaves. That said, who cares: the song is beautiful. Oh Gawwd it is so stunning.
