We want to believe the best about her, that she's faithful and loyal and virtuous. Even when we see signs that she's just another opportunistic, gold-digging, two-faced, cheating whore, we turn a blind eye in order to preserve the image we have of her (the Great Compromise). But then the day comes when we just can't fool ourselves any longer, and regrettably we finally see her for the "sick woman" that she really is.

I knew a girl who was almost a ladyShe had a way with all the men in her lifeEvery inch of her blossom and beautyShe was born on the 4th of JulyWell she lived in an aluminum house trailerAnd she worked in a jukebox saloonAnd she spent all the money that I give herJust to see the ol' man in the MoonRefrain:I used to sleep at the foot of Old GloryAnd awaken to dawn's early lightBut much to my surprise, when I opened my eyesI was the victim of the Great CompromiseWell we'd go out on Saturday eveningsTo the drive-in on Route 41And it was there that I first suspectedThat she was doin' what she'd already doneShe said "Johnny, won't you get me some popcorn?"And she knew I had to walk pretty farAnd as soon as I passed through the moonlightShe hopped into a foreign sports carRefrainWell, you know, I could have beat up that fellaBut it was her that had hopped into his carAnd many times I fought to protect herBut this time she was going too farNow some folks they call me a cowardCause I left her at the drive-in that nightBut I'd rather have names thrown at meThan to fight for a thing that ain't rightRefrainWell she writes all the fellas love lettersSaying "Greetings, come and see me real soon"And they go and line up in the barroomAnd spend the night in that sick woman's roomBut sometimes I get awful lonesomeAnd I wish she was my girl insteadBut she won't let me live with herAnd she makes me live in my headRefrain

.Saw JP in the early eighties in Dayton. Really fun to sit and listen to his songs. This is a great one! I also like Hello In There, Souvenirs and many others. Arlo Guthrie was the headliner in Dayton but JP was much better.

It is impossible to describe John Prine. I had the good foitune of finding his great music forty years ago. I have never looked back. Been playing it ever since. He is a Great Composer because he writes songs about our lives. God bless him for that.

"Well ya know, I coulda beat up that feller. But it was HER that hopped into HIS car, and many times I fought to protect her, but this time she was going too far." A great man once told me once not to fall into "The Great Compromise". He was a John Prine fan, and turned me onto some great songs.
