Well said John but the difference is the Clyde is alive and kicking and still building ships were the Tyne and the Mersey were left to die shortly followed by Portsmouth , so it's not really the same

This was the song at my grandad's funeral, he lived in Newcastle his whole life, when he was young he was in the merchant navy then was a steelworker in town, the second verse sums him up just right

Well said Stan, as a young Geordie lad I worked on the Clyde in various docks, Elderly Dry Dock in Scotston, living in the Gorbals, loved the Barra Land dance, fond memories and great folk the Glaswegians

This song can make me cry. For although about the Tyne it could so easily be about the Clyde and my hometown of Glasgow. I can think of few songs with better lyrics. Absolutely brilliant Jimmy. You should be very proud to have written this song.

Sad yes, but a Beaut of a song..... WOW ! This is such a heartfelt song, with GREAT lyrics (the lack of which in recent music I have long been moaning about !), telling the true story of how we've gone down the road of technology, quick fixes & "Living in the now", when we are coming to find out that, that's NOT what life is all about. It's Roots, Faith & Family values, Brother/sisterhood, Respect, not only for the self, but for the other living beings which we SHARE this planet with. We DON'T OWN it... Tell that to the Finance houses & those who believe themselves to be the overlords of this planet & ultimately our demise. The need to look further than the circular encampment of our own needs above everyone else's, the destruction of that which gave us a backbone & values, Hard work & Neighbourhoods, where we are safe, the kids could roam freely & not sit in bedrooms playing computer games, making them think that that is what is real..... Water which one could drink from a stream, a GROWING Planet, not an overburdened one, dying to keep us alive, wealthy & spoilt ! I can even hear traces of Nils Lofgrin in there ! A beaut of a song & visionary too ! We need to get "Back to the Garden", before it disappears under all the concrete & waste. I wonder whether anyone still thinks of "what are we leaving our children & their children to live in & on". Will they ever BE able to Live ? Let's not forget to THINK & ACT. Make your concerns known or disappear down the drain of a disappearing civilisation.

Can't beat it. Heartfelt sentiment, great melody and poignant lyrics. This is Nail at his songsmith peak.
