First of all, yes, I realize I misspelled Jimmie's name on the video...

This song was originally recorded by Dickey Doo and the Dont's in the 1950's. It was released on the flip-side of their single "The Judge."

In 1961, Jimmie Rodgers recorded it and released it as a single. The single topped the charts at just #71. However, the flip-side of the record "English Country Garden" reached #5 in the United Kingdom and is the song most people remember today. The backing vocals are provided by the Jordanaires who also recorded with Elvis Presley.

The song has been released on several Jimmie Rodgers compilations, all of which are now out of print. The songs of Dickey Doo and the Dont's have never compiled onto a single release, but several songs are available on various compilation of Sixties hits.

It wasn't easy making this video - the song is a tear-jerker! Also, I had to look through a lot of photos of lost and stray dogs. I tried to use photos that would tell the story without giving away the ending too soon.

There was one terrible day we had to put our dog away, to the vet we had to go, to, ease his pain and misery of slow death, He lay there on the table not one fuss, he knew his time had come, he waged his tail weakly, and licked our hands every one , bid us goodbye, the needle given he sat up with a swift movement looked up with blind eyes the ceiling, deaf ears went up to hear words he had not heard for years, though we could not hear now, to a glowing spot in the ceiling, I swear to this day i saw a ghostly hand come down, and bid our friend to come, his tail waged and his face had a wide doggy smile of panting tongue and with a soundless bark, a doggy soul leapt upward left, as his very old body that slid down to death, we all including the vet cried we had witnessed a miracle before our eyes , yes there is a heaven for our best friend yes indeed be assured even the vet he'd seen it before that day he said ,so let no one doubt.dogs go to heaven.

Yes, this was the B side of 'English Country Garden'. Reading your comments could have been me ("Mum had it" - I've got it now - "radiogram", "made me cry", "little kid"). Only difference is, I am now 49. Still cry every single time!!! I only have to think of the song and the tears begin to flow.

Dogs definitely cry when they lose someone they love, and when they're discarded by the ones they love. All animals have emotions, and this song just makes me cry. Please be kind to the animals, they give it back without wanting anything but your love.

Ah yes. How I remember being tortured by this song when I was little . I spent nights sobbing over this tune and was so bereft my parents had to keep me off school! This and the The Little Match Girl .....I spent a lot of time crying when I was a kid!

THIS IS WONDERFUL. You did a very good job. I had not seen this video until after I made one for Jimmie's song, "A Little Dog Cried:. Yours is better, But, I guess YouTube can handle two versions of this specific video. Mine is titled "Jimmie Rodgers Medley" and was posted yesterday. Keep up the good work. Agin, I really like what you did with this record. Bud Gray
