Due to the success of her portrayal of Billie Dawn in "Born Yesterday," for which she won the 1950 Academy Award for Best Actress, Judy Holliday was forever type-cast as a dumb blonde in all her movie roles, this, despite the fact that she had an I.Q. of 172. She only made a few films, and during the last years of her life, she divided her time between recording and appearing on stage. Her last movie "Bells Are Ringing" (1960) was the film adapation of the stage play for which she won the 1957 Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Musical. During the last five years of her life, she battled breast cancer and finally succumbed to the disease on June 7, 1965 at the age of 43.

In 1958 at the age of 37, she recorded a solo album entitled "Trouble Is A Man." Though not a great singer, she proved herself to be a great stylist. A reviewer of the album remarked that there was more to singing than just hitting the right notes - there was also technique and style. Miss Holliday's performances of the various songs on the album proved that she had plenty of both.

For the video treatment of this song, I've used stills featuring several of her leading men - Aldo Ray, William Holden, Jack Lemmon, and Dean Martin, as well as video clips from her last film, "Bells Are Ringing." Hope you like it...

TROUBLE IS A MAN

(Words and music by Alec Wilder)

A woman gets all the blame

For everything that happens under the sun

But when it comes to being bad

A woman's not the only one

Trouble is a man

A man who loves me no more, no more

Trouble is a man

A man I'll always adore

Nothing good to say about him

Still I hate a day without him

Why should he have to be

The one?

My only trouble is a man

A man who's handsome and tall, so tall

Trouble is a man

Who never loved me at all

After all we planned, he didn't mean it

Now I understand, I should have seen it

Trouble is a man

Trouble is a man I love

I, too, was shocked at how good a voice Judy Holliday had. Definitely unrecognizable from the one you hear in her movies. Sad that she died so young. She had brains, beauty, comic acting skill, and a great singing voice. You'd never know she was an alto from the ditzy characters she played onscreen.

I don't know how you can say she wasn't a great singer. She has a fantastic voice.

@NedNickerson2010 not reese, no way not petty enough and talentless when compared to Miss Holiday.

@JubalCalif I wish they would do a movie about her life. I've always thought Reese Witherspoon would be a good choice to play the role of Judy...

Heavens to Murgatroid! Listening to this, one would never know it's Judy, since we're so used to that "Born Yesterday" voice! What a talented vocalist. Her early death from cancer deprived us of one of the most gifted performers America ever produced. THANKS for posting this gem! CHEERS! :-)
