AMEN

You're mothers' child

but night lays you down

hair aflame, wile look in your eye

Naked belly to the ground

A forest fire

Nibbles at your veins

Crawls up your arm

runs away with your mind

And burns dry thoughts like leaves

Amen

Eyes stare up

but something's in the way

In the Bible only angels have wings

And the rest must wait to be saved

A dry tongue

Screams at the sky

But the wind just breathes words in

As a strange bird tries to fly

Amen

Pieces of us die everyday

As though our flesh were hell

Such injustice, as children we are told

That from God we fell.

Where are my angels?

Where's my golden one?

Where's my hope

now that my heroes have gone?

Some are being beaten

Some are being born.

And some can't tell the difference anymore

Amen

Hallelujah

Hallelujah

I discovered this when I was 14 and I remember listening to this song and myMom and grandma just said "that's the dumbest song I've ever heard". Who could think that about this song?? One of my favorites.

I've been a fan of Jewel ever since this album came out, and I still think this song is her greatest triumph out of all of them. She's had a lot of great singles over the years with lyrics that are easy to relate to, and melodies that get stuck in your head for weeks, but this song is truly in a class by itself. There's something inexplicably deep about it that sends a chill up my spine every time I listen to it. A masterful, unforgettable piece of work. Thumbs way up.

My God, one of the most beautiful songs of all time. From a truly perfect in every way album. I still blast this album to this day to get a glimpse into what my poetry should be. This is perfection.

Such an amazing song. I just rediscovered it today after about 8 years and was struck by how powerful it is.
