*Big Dipper*--*Jethro Tull*They were really asking for it from the music press when they named their 1976 album "Too Old To Rock 'n' Roll, Too Young To Die." What began as the songs for a stage musical that never got off the ground for various reasons ended up being one of Tull's most purely enjoyable records. "Big Dipper" (which my autocorrect keeps trying to tell me should be "Big Supper," btw) typifies the spirit of fun and frolic Ray Lomas (the lead character of the abandoned stage project) misses from his younger days as a greaser/rocker in the 1960's. It isn't one of the better known songs from the album but it's one of my favorites. The Big Dipper in question is a rollercoaster, by the way. Ian Anderson grew up in Blackpool, England, a sea resort known for its thrill rides and pebbly beaches, and the song definitely has a lived-in feeling of youthful exuberance and happy memories. Enjoy!+Emma Selle

What does Ian Anderson mean when he refers to 'the Glasgow train'? I'm guessing some kind of youth riot but can't find any references to it online.

Great song. Thanks for posting. Remember, this was decades before rock 'n' rollers were in their 70's. ;-)

Yes, thats right. He did just go on with it, but he was still making kind of a statement with this. That trends come and go! But yeah, Neil Young did that too, but practically going all out punk!

Well, he did, just by getting on with his own thing and not moaning incessantly about how awful punk was. Unlike some other prog rock people I could mention !! Neil Young was another one who just got on with it. In fact many of his fans think that punk gave him the boot up the backside he needed, and afterwards he produced his best music.

I thought you'd like this one! Yes, the title is basically about an aging rocker who is trying to survive the latest trend, at that time PUNK!
