A bonus track from Heavy Horses. I thought this song might be appropriate.

Lyrics - The bone's in the china. The fat's in the fire.

There's no turkey left on the table.

The commuter's return on the six o'clock flyer

brings no bale of hay for the stable.

Well, the light, it is failing along the green belt

as we follow the hard road signs.

Semi-detached in our suburban-ness

we're living in these hard times.

Well the fly's in the milk and the cat's in the stew.

Another bun in the oven oh, what to do?

We'll laugh and we'll sing and try to bring

a pound from your pocket.

Good day to you.

Oh, these hard times.

The politicians sat on the wall

and traded with the union game.

Someone slapped a writ on our deficit

not a penny left to our name.

Oh, the times are hard and the credits lean,

and they toss and they turn in sleep.

And the line they take is the line they make

but it's not the line they keep.

Well the fly's in the milk and the cat's in the stew.

Another bun in the oven oh, what to do?

We'll laugh and we'll sing and try to bring

a pound from your pocket.

Good day to you.

Oh, these hard times.

The cow jumped over yesterday's moon

and the lock ran away with the key.

You know what you like, and you like what you know

but there is no jam for tea.

Well the light it is failing along the green belt

as we follow the hard road signs.

We're living in these hard times.

This song is not about being poor.

Listen to the music quality and vocals it's very similar to Jack in the green for example. I think they wouldn't put it on Songs From The Woods album. Or recorded it after released album in '77.

I wish this had been on the album instead of 'No Lullaby', which gets on my nerves ! Far superior in my opinion. I think HH stands up really well as an album...and yes, this track could have been about 2012. Interesting.

I came across this song when I was sampling Heavy Horses, strange how it is relative to the times today.

This is the last Tull album I liked. The title track is particularly good.

Apologies, I have a slight correction: "Living In These Hard Times" was indeed track 14 on disc 2, but that was on the 3-CD "20th Anniversary" limited edition set from 1988 (which I also tracked down a while thereafter at great expense), but on my 5-LP incarnation, it was actually on record 4 as track 5, still between "Kelpie" & "Under Wraps 2". But I trust we'll both agree that by whatever means we might've stumbled across it, it's really a wonderful little song. Best wishes.

With all due respect, yes, it most certainly was. It appeared on the limited edition 5-LP box set in 1988, which I bought that year. It was on disc 2 (entitled "Flawed Gems & Other Sides Of Tull"), it's track 14, between "Kelpie" & "Under Wraps 2". This compilation was only available for a brief time, then came the highly truncated "20th Anniversary" release featuring mere highlights from the larger compilation. But I think it's wonderful that it's been included on the remastered "Heavy Horses".

Well I would assume that it is because its included as a bonus track on Heavy Horses.

Such a FANTASTIC song! Seriously, one of my favourite Tull songs, close to perfect. This is probably a VERY stupid question, but is this the same line-up as the rest of the "Heavy Horses" album?

Yes, those two songs go perfectly well together. Since they both touch upon the same subjects, but musically they are quite different. This song is more folk acoustic like where as Fallen On Hard Times is more hard rock driven. But still the songs do go well together. I actually posted that one too, it was like only my second post. Yeah that's Ok, at least you discovered it!

Back in the dim & distant past, I loved making cassette tape song mixes, and I liked pairing this song w/ "Hard Times" from the "Broadsword" album. Still, I'm even more fond of this tune because of it's instrumentation, it's a softer more lilting piece than the other musical essay on hard times, but because of that they contrasted one another quite nicely. And I also saw that recent live clip, too, last night. Yes, I guess I was more than a bit distracted from noticing this vid in your archives.

Thanks Gothling, I'm surprised you haven't seen this one yet! I posted it quite awhile ago. But glad you found it anyway. Yes this is a rare one, that is one reason I wanted to post it. Plus I thought it was kind of relevant too. Tull have been even playing this recently in their set-list!

Great video! Geez, how could I have forgotten this song? It just goes to show you how long it's been since I've heard my vinyl copy of Tull's 20th anniversary box set. Love this song, and I'm in your debt, Aqua, for having the excellent taste to post it.

Oh yes he does have solo albums, I forgot to to mention you'd really love his solo album Walk Into Light. Its very electronic and synth dominated.
