Possibly the most English of all hymns, 'Jerusalem'.

Words by William Blake and Music written by Sir Charles Hubert Hastings Parry. By many it is considered the unofficial anthem of England. The orchestral version does not exactly match the organ music written but is close enough!

Interestingly by some with in the Church, Jerusalem they say is in fact not a hymn due to it not being a prayer or praising God. As such it has been removed from hymn lists most notably at Southwark Cathedral.

I do think Sir William Blake would be happy knowing we are still discussing his poem of societal protest in the year 2018. Made more famous by Sir Charles Hubert Hastings beautiful rousing score. Kudo's to both great men ! This glorious hymn proves "There will always be an England !" It is up to our generation and duty to make it a better England, United Kingdom and Commonwealth. Enough talk, what we need are prayers and action mates ! Peace.

Dog Is Life/Jerusalem by the The Fall on their I am Kurious, Oranj album. Mark it seems appreciated Blake and his art and venerated them in some ways perhaps. Two men of burning genius in my books. His answer to why he liked Blake's work was brining up Ghost of a Flee. He liked the grotesque in an artist. Brilliant! If you think you're living in a tough time with your clean water, electricity, clothes, TVs, phones, food, holidays, internet, cars, drugs, housing, heating etc then imagine what it was like living at the beginning of the 19th Century. Your country is at war with France and a number of other European countries. Is instrumental in the slave trade and the riches gained there of. Is incarcerating old people, women and kids in deadly factories for most of the day and night. Your King is literally insane! Barefaced corruption is rife. Parliament is a racket with privileged war mongers at the helm (We've still got that). Very few people have the vote. The country is going through bouts of famine. Riots are erupting in various cities. There is unimaginable poverty and filth everywhere in London and other major towns and cities (which we still do have to our shame though of nothing to the degree of Blake's time). France has recently torn up the rule book and ended hundreds of year of Monarchical Despotism to be followed by yet more barbarism with Robespierre and now a new Caesar in the figure of Napoleon. Just imagine being a radical artist at that time amidst all that and the blossoming of the Enlightenment and the Romantics.

Actually ANON B..The English have always suffered, whether,in skirmishes or wars..England will stand up for what SHE believes in....she did not conquer the world, that was Uk...whether through Edward I or any other king....England NEEDS a patriotic anthem..We do not have one..Like the Scottish,Welsh or Irish..So its about time England stood up and said YES we need our anthem now.Thank you

Doing some research, this arrangement of Jerusalem was orchestrated by Edward Elgar. Sounds too much majestic for it not to have some Elgar influence.
