As Maxwell Mann so well stated, Jerry Hubbard is in my "Top Ten" best guitarist ever. Also included is Tommy Emmanuel, Chester B. Atkins, Carlos Santana, Eric Clapton, Paul Yandel (the electric guitarist who played behind Jerry in his studio sessions), and others.

I have heard several versions of this song, including Ray Charles' version. But, I don't think anybody put more emotion into it than Jerry Reed, in my most humble of opinions. It truly sounds like he really misses his home state and can't wait to return. Willie Nelson's version sucked to me. He sang it like it was a song and nothing more.

@4WhiteLight NO KIDDING???? Ray Stevens is on B3??? This is by far my favorite song of Jerry's...I cry every time I listen. I always wondered who was comping behind him and playing such understated but PERFECT Hammond behind him. WOW...I'm blown away.

Don't forget the tasteful Hammond B-3 by Ray Stevens. Interesting both of them are known for their other more comical endeavours. I liked the comment someone made that Jerry's music seemed to come out of nowhere. He once said that his music was an expression of the deeper reality he was living, but not the source. Amen...

Had Jerry wanted to, I think he could've been an even better jazz player than he already was...his feel, phrasing, and note choices were evidence of his ear and he was most definitely inspired by Ray Charles...this is by far my favorite performance of his and wished he'd done a whole album of standards. I miss him very much. He and Chet and my dad inspired me to play and I continue today as a working musician hoping for those moments like these in this performance.

@peterguit Glen Campbell & Jerry worked with Ray on an album. Unpaid and uncredited, but both were big Ray charles fans and the feeling was mutual!

@mdffyx Jerry recorded with RCA until about 1984. By then RCA Victor was dropping everyone. Waylon Jennings, Chet Atkins, Porter Wagoner, and then even Dolly Parton! Probably around smokey N Bandit (I think Atkins helped produce "The Legend")time 1977, Reed starting being produced by Chip Young. He also abandoned his thumb pick for a while and recorded witha straight pick. These recordings were a little more pop sounding than country. He eventually went back to the thumb pick! Miss him!

@flimflam4141 I agree. Although Jerry was a big fan of Ray Charles I think Ray could have learned a thing or two from Jerry also..
