This song was written and recorded in 1977 by James Taylor. The LP was just titled JT and Linda Ronstadt sang backup vocal. I heard this song on YouTube sung by George Jones, and it sounded so familar to me. Then it hit me, that James Taylor sang this song too. I hope you like it. The drinks look so pretty, all icey and cold.

Let's just say both versions are great.I prefer George's version, but I like anything from sweet baby James.Let's wonder now how it would have sounded with lovely Linda backing up George. BTW,James & Linda backed up Neil Young on "Heart of Gold"!

I like this version...But George Jones had a better fitting voice for the "pain" in this song. GJ hands down

James Taylor sings great...But George Jones version is legendary and his voice was better fit for the "pain" in the story this song tells.

lol this is a great song and JT sings it great....but Jones version has more soul and pain in it....and plus Jones version has a better voice for it and tells the story much better... if anything GJ keeps the "water" out of his version

This song brings back some memories. It's sad about Linda Ronstadt and Parkinson's taking her singing voice. She once had powerful voice. I saw her, Bonnie Raitt and Emmy Lou Harris do a show with Little Feat before Lowell George died. This reminds me of how fast our time here flies by. Live and love it large while you can and treat everyone right.

Thanks for clearing this up for me, I'm fairly new to this song and didn't quite know who wrote it. definitely love the James Taylor version of the song more than the George Jones version!

"Nobody could sing like George Jones. Everyone who could imitate him did. I wrote and recorded a song, 'Bartender's Blues,' as a tribute and, in an instance of life-imitating-art, George recorded it and asked me to harmonize. It was the second dream come true of my career." — James Taylor

"He was a true innovator. Nobody could sing like George Jones. Everyone who could imitate him did. I wrote and recorded a song, 'Bartender's Blues,' as a tribute and, in an instance of life-imitating-art, George recorded it and asked me to harmonize. It was the second dream come true of my career. He was easy and kind and I'll never forget him. Luckily, he recorded a lot of music; so he'll always be with us." ~ James Taylor via FB, 4-26-13

George blows James out of the water as a singer of country music, and I think James would agree with that assessment, but it seems like George absolutely mailed in that performance. I love George, but he has recorded many songs that didn't show how great he is

If you've never been broken hearted, sitting in a dark bar getting drunk to drown your sorrows you'll not really understand this song. I think it's a masterpiece.
