This song is beyond amazing and such a great tribute. I'm so glad to have found this gem of a song.

Published in 1992 "Young Men & Fire" gives the most moving and accurate description of the tragedy at Mann Gulch. The book was published one year after author Norman Maclean's death and features extensive quotes by the three survivors. It is a must read for anybody who wants to learn the whole story (as well as it can be reconstructed) of the Mann Gulch Fire. The book is very well written.

Sadly when this fatal accident occurred fire science was in infant state. We learned a lot of good information from this accident. These men died doing a job few are able to do an we must honor their bravery.

Simply one of the greatest folk songs ever written, by a great singer/songwriter that should be far more well-known that he is. I've seen him multiple times in concert, and these show are among my most cherished memories. If you can see him live, do so. And buy his records! His songs will be true light in your life.

Oh yeah, because they had all the equipment to fight fires in 1949 we have now. A lot of good came from this fire you know. But studies estimated that the fire covered 3,000 acres in 10 minutes during the blow-up stage. An hour and 45 minutes after they arrived. Thirteen firefighters had died; three survived. Two died the next day though. Here's a link to the fire in the song look up Mann Gulch fire. It's the fire mentioned in the song.

@Fire23eater perhaps you should keep your evidently poorly-informed and idiotic comments to yourself.
