Oh Marieke, Marieke, I loved you so muchBetween the towers of Bruges and GhentOh Marieke, Marieke, long agoBetween the towers of Bruges and GhentWithout love, warm loveThe wind blows, the stupid windWithout love, warm loveThe ocean cries, the grey oceanWithout love, warm loveThe light suffers, the dark lightAnd the sand scours my countryMy flat country, my FlandersOh Marieke, Marieke, the Flemish skyThe colour of the towers between Bruges and GhentOh Marieke, Marieke, the Flemish skyCries with me from Bruges to GhentWithout love, warm loveThe wind blows “IT’S OVER”Without love, warm loveThe ocean cries “ALREADY OVER”Without love, warm loveThe light suffers, “EVERYTHING IS OVER”And the sand scours my countryMy flat country, my FlandersOh Marieke, Marieke, the Flemish skyDid it weigh too much from Bruges to Ghent?Oh Marieke, Marieke, on your twenty yearsI loved that so much, from Bruges to GhentWithout love, warm loveThe devil laughs, the black devilWithout love, warm loveMy heart burns, my old heartWithout love, warm loveThe summer dies, the sad summerAnd the sand scours my countryMy flat country, my FlandersOh Marieke, Marieke, rewind the timeRewind the time back to Bruges and GhentOh Marieke, Marieke, rewind the timeWhere you loved me, from Bruges to GhentOh Marieke, Marieke, often at nightBetween the towers of Bruges and GhentOh Marieke, Marieke, all pondsOpen their/your arms for me from Bruges to GhentFrom Bruges to Ghent, from Bruges to Ghent…Beautiful song that takes on so much more after reading a translation of the lyrics.

I have listened to this beautiful song for so very many years, but just now found this video and saw Brel sing it. Before watching this clip, I found what I think to be a very good translation which I will post in a minute. (I saved them in another browser.)

I really appreciate the trouble people took answering my questions. I learnt a lot, thank you. One reason why I asked is because I never found answers on internet. I am curious if anyone knows of a really good website, or a really good book to use for interpreting Brel's songs. This way I can leave you all alone and you all have more time to yourselves! :-) Thank you , Merci, Dank U Wel.

I have another question. Near the middle of the song, he sings"Zonder liefde, warme liefde Waait de wind C'EST FINI...." and 3 times, he interjects with French words. (He uses Flemish three times in the song. The second time is identical to the first, except for the few inserted French words.) Is there any reason why he would embed French words into the Flemish portion of the song? (C'EST FINI , DÉJÀ FINI, TOUT EST FINI) Any opinions/suggestions? Merci!

His performance is stunning. I am curious, why does he sometimes sing "Bruges et Gand" and other times "Bruges à Gand". I looked at they lyrics carefully. I do not understand why he sometimes uses "to" and other times "and". Would anyone know? Thank you, Merci, Dank U Wel

No one on this planet could sing or write a song like Brel. He put every fibre of his being into each performance -- as if his life depended on it. Il est mon heros.
