William Steinberg's recording of Holst's 'The Planets' with the Boston Symphony Orchestra is one of the most exciting versions ever recorded. It dates from 1970 when Steinberg was chief conductor of the Boston Symphony. We hear the first movement, 'Mars, the Bringer of War.'

From 3:56......WOW! So incredibly menacing, driving....almost ahead of the beat....terrifyingly wonderful! I don't think I have ever heard this version before. Certainly one of the best!

If you look for Albert Coates's 1926 78rpm disc of 'Mars' on here, you'll find he whips through it in 6 minutes flat! On the other hand, Bernard Herrmann's 1970s version, also here on YT, takes well over 8 minutes and is laboriously slow.

Host's own 1923 recording is 12 seconds shorter.

If you type 'Holst Mars Holst conducts' you'll find the composer's own 1926 recording here on YT and if anything it's a tad faster than Steinberg :)

Tempo is a bit quicker than Holst's would conduct it, but I feel that this is the PROPER one :)

I think so too. I also think I read somewhere that Steinberg had never conducted this work before, prior to making this recording. Maybe someone can confirm that.
