William Steinberg's recording of Holst's 'The Planets' with the Boston Symphony Orchestra is one of the most exciting versions ever recorded. It dates from 1970 when Steinberg was chief conductor of the Boston Symphony. We hear the first movement, 'Mars, the Bringer of War.'

If you look for Albert Coates's 1926 78rpm disc of 'Mars' on here, you'll find he whips through it in 6 minutes flat! On the other hand, Bernard Herrmann's 1970s version, also here on YT, takes well over 8 minutes and is laboriously slow.12 years ago

If you type 'Holst Mars Holst conducts' you'll find the composer's own 1926 recording here on YT and if anything it's a tad faster than Steinberg :)12 years ago

Tempo is a bit quicker than Holst's would conduct it, but I feel that this is the PROPER one :)12 years ago

I think so too. I also think I read somewhere that Steinberg had never conducted this work before, prior to making this recording. Maybe someone can confirm that.12 years ago
