Why is it called a "tom tom"?

Gene Krupa as well as other drummers, like Cozy Cole, kept a "loose" snare, while drummers, such as Buddy Rich, kept his "tight". Nice drumming, BTW - I like those who look the part of class!

Just a bit of correction. Buddy Rich didn't start with Harry James. His big band playing career started with Bunny Berigan, then Artie Shaw, then Tommy Dorsey, then his own big band, then Harry James, Harry James, back to Dorsey, back to James and then finally in 1966 his own band till he died. For a brief while in the mid 1970's he went to a small group but prett much his last twenty years was with his own big band.

I love hearing a well tuned tom tom and snare and bass for that matter. It's funny that a student of mine sold me his barely used Ludwig Accent Combo kit in trade for three lessons. I tuned them up and they sound great even though they are a beginner set. I have 8 other sets so I'll sell them but I had a question for you on how you tune in general. Do you prefer the top head higher bottom lower, other way around or both heads the same tension?

Great drumming Danny, Krupa's style is so infectious and right now I am going on the set and try so of those licks with that nice off the head touch that you do so, so well.

Loving these series and this part is another great one! Krupa was really fun to watch and hear. Didn't know about the toms. Always learning. Just a side note: Krupa would be proud to hear and watch Daniel Glass playing. Great drummer and teacher. Cheers!
