The expression "rock and roll" was in use by mid-1951 to describe R&B with backbeat, which had already been a fad and known as "rockers" in 1949, with recordings like "Rock That Boogie" by Jimmy Smith, "Rock The Joint" by Chris Powell, "Boogie At Midnight" by Roy Brown, and "Rockin' All Day" by Jimmy McCracklin. "Hillbilly" musicians became increasingly interested in that non-"hillbilly" "rockers" sound during 1950-1951, which resulted in 1950-1951 hybrid recordings like "Birmingham Bounce" by Hardrock Gunter, "Rocket 88" by Bill Haley, and "Rock City Boogie" by Tennessee Ernie Ford and the Dinning Sisters.

Thanks for doing this, Daniel. I have been playing the drums most of my life and it's cool to see the history behind our wonderful instrument. I learned something cool from every segment.
