OK - this is the last one I have from this concert of the late great Danny Gatton. It is an old simple country tune, but Gatton plays it like an incredible guitar clinic and shows how to take a black and white tune and turn it into a rainbow of flowing technicolor! I encourage all you Gatton guitar fans who have similar footage buried in your closet to get it out and share it like I've done. Danny Gatton playing and memory must live on. Enjoy

Xtc1957 that guitar didn't have the original 53 tele pickups in it, but were rather made by Joe Barden. Danny called them the Cadillac of the telecaster pickups. Yes it's bright, but does it get buried in the mix? No.

The lead work is of course, what one might expect from Gatton...but those chord changes are just so incredibly special. He may well be the best country guitarist in history. Unfortunately, he's riding all over the singer here, which is about as inappropriate a move as any instrumentalist can make, particularly with a song as great as this one. On the other hand, the vocalist is as flat as a well-worn tire. Gatton was truly remarkable, and it came so naturally to him. I'm not even sure I liked the tone of his Telecaster; he loved that old black guard, and mister, those things had the ice pick going in a big way. Not a pretty sound...But he knew how to move around the body and volume/tone controls enough to make it sing in his one way.

Incredible player, been a fan for many years...that said...this was his gig, but if he over rode a singer say for instance, Ray Price in a singers band, he would have been fired immediately. He did play a long time with Roger Miller so he did know how to rein it in. One of my favorites of his live playing is Crosscut Saw. Any thing he did was great...wish he was still around,,,same for Roy Buchanan, Jimi, Stevie, Howard Roberts, Wes, Freddie King, etc, etc,

Found him a couple years before he died , luckily caught him at The Guthrie Theatre in Mpls - WOW - He still makes my heart soar , with "Nit Pickin" and his version of "Tragedy" , and , his killer work with Joey DeFrancesco , the banter with that Hammond !

the imitation pedal steel @ 1:30 is just ludicrous

It's hard to believe Danny Gatton has been gone 20 years and Shawn Lane has been gone 11 . No one quite fills their shoes even after all this time .

Ok I have to admit I have been coming back to this one over and over. As John says he takes this tune and does something else- the ease and facile nature of his playing on this is awesome, the whole thing between 1:25 and 2:15 is mind blowing. I would go the crossroads to play like this.

To this day the guy continues to blow everyone else away. He's up there in the top 3 greatest. Kid Rock #1, dude from Pearl Jam #2, then Danny. I kid, nobody plays better than the dude from Pearl Jam.

Amazing player. Love his style and he is such an emotive player. You can see his influence from playing the steel guitar for many years.

I wish that guy would quit talking so I could hear Gatton better.

It's too bad that nearly 20 years after his death, so many don't know who Danny was. FWIW - He was a Washington D.C. area guitarist and a true master of the Telecaster. He dabbled in country, blues and rockabilly, but was best at his own style of what he called "redneck jazz".
