Such nice memories with this song but as with most songs I remember and love the memories were always in my lonely head. Thank goodness there was music to lean on.

I'm not sure I'd call this the best "Father and Son" song ever. Whilst a truly beautiful composition, (and I love Harry), it is a cautionary tale. This song is how NOT to treat your son/daughter lest history repeat itself. As ye sow, so shall ye reap.

Wow! What a true and close resemblance to his talented singer/songwriter dad. I'm so glad that his wife wrote the poem and Harry wrote the music. This song is one of my all time favorite Harry Chapin compositions. I believe that this was a huge hit for Mr. Chapin and deservedly so. I have the recording and his songs never grow old. Another good post! Thanks for posting this song. Enjoying it very much!

For the love of the money

This song reminds me of how much of a father my dad wasn't, he was never there for me. He abused my mother psychically and verbally while I was 0-5, was home maybe once a month and my mom worked 24/7 to support 3 kids without a college degree so I grew up being "raised" by nannies and day care centers. I once cracked my head open and almost died because when I was crying my dad told me to shut up so he could play PS1. When my dad was finally caught cheating on my mom with a prostitute she divorced him just after I turned 6. He drove me to school said he loved me and I never saw him again, until about 2 months ago on my birthday he shows up at my college dorm and tries to re unite with me after all these years, so we go on a road trip to his " house " across the U.S. Long story short, there was no house, my "dad" stole every dollar I had $2500 to my name at the time as a freshman in college, worked with him on his job and never paid me a cent of the 3000 I was supposed to get, made me drop out of college that I worked my ass off to get into, psychically abused me along the way, lied to me about my mom being a whore etc, abandoned me with no money no cell phone no where to go on the complete opposite side of the U.S. In the middle of no where, luckily the only real father figure in my life paid for a plane ticket for me and I hitch hiked a ride to a police station, not to mention he mislead my little brother and sister (8 and 10) to thinking they were going to live with him and they have no idea what happened. Needles to say I fucking hate my "dad" and this song makes me wish I never knew him so I could at least be upset about not growing up with a father, well guess what , my mom makes 6 figures now and my POS dad drives a truck for a living, if you ever read this dad you know who you are and you disgust me

The one wish I have for my son, is that he grows up, to be a better man, than me.
