Beef was one odd character the true Dada artists. Some say Zappa only pretended to be odd and out there while Beef really was. He's certainly an acquired taste. But a guy who virtually imprisons his band for close to a year while recording Trout Mask Replica, keeping only the music at the forefront ALL the time and keeping it positive while even entertaining the Captain with your antics full of enthusiasm, I guess you could say he was a cult leader. Strange days indeed.

I saw Don play years ago, and he was truly a unique performer. Sadly, he died of complications from multiple sclerosis a couple of years ago, not too long after this was taped. You haven't lived until you heard him play soprano sax and bass clarinet at the same time. It was simply brilliant.
