I first heard this song in January 1968 on a new transistor radio I got the previous month for Christmas. I was in the 7th grade.

In the early spring of 1968, I was on a Combat Assault (gunner on a Huey Helicopter). I was monitoring Armed Forces Radio on one of our FM Radio Sets as we flew toward the enemy position in the mountains (It was the hour they played Country Western Music), and as we got near the target, I reached up to turn off that channel, when this song came on. I delayed turning the radio off hoping to hear it all before we went into combat, but, part way through the song, we were in the shooting war. It has always mystified me how modern technology (for the time) could have found me in combat, listening to other necessary frequencies while trying to shut this song out of my mind, which I had wanted to hear so badly. I was able to concentrate, and the attack went well. But, even to this day, while I enjoy this song in peace and quiet, it brings back the faint sounds of combat from the past.

my dad would sing this song while we rode horses when I was a kid . I used to try to sing it with him even though I didn't have a clue who most of the people were . thanks for sharing this , I can now learn it and sing it in memory of my dad
