to the best of my knowledge it was Hank Locklin who wrote this song, several other people recorded it, including Johnny Cash and they changed it around some. Hank's version is now and was then the best version of this song

Love this song, it brings back a lot of memories. We had this on an album and I would sing this song over and over while discing ground on an old John Deere tractor. That was over 50 years ago. Thanks for posting.
